#23- Italian Vacation: Ventimiglia Day 2

cat Baby

Day two we headed to the medieval part of Ventimiglia which is up on a hill, overlooking the sea. We parked on the outskirts and walked up several stairs to enter the old town, meandering through its winding passageways where the residents live and work. This is not an area that caters heavily to tourists like other spots in Italy- but because of that you can get more of a feel for how people actually live.

Laundry hung out to dry was everywhere…

as were small shrines.

Around the corner from this shrine was another find- St. Michael’s Church.

Within the old medieval town, St. Michael Archangel Church is definitely worth a visit. Built in the 10th century on the foundation of a roman temple, it was added to in the 11th century with the remains of an old baptistery incorporated into the church. We walked inside and began to look around- a bit distracted by the statues and architecture…

…when seemingly out of nowhere a priest quietly whispered to us that we must go downstairs.

Winding down the staircase into the quiet warm glow of the church basement, there is a fresco on the wall, a crypt, and exhibits with roman milestones.

You will likely be alone, or nearly so- a calming experience.

We briefly stopped for cappuccino in one of the cafes. Here is the view from our table.

Upon leaving, we spotted these boys with their makeshift imaginary swords made out of wood!

Not sure what the shopping cart was for…

But here they are in action.

That’s all for now. More in next post!
